This would have been a stunning cynarina on its own. With its rich ruby coloration and stunning sunlight colored accents, it’s a top specimen. But there’s two!!! Side by side twin cynarina!!! The cynarina to the right is slightly smaller but no less beautiful! A true rarity amongst these solitary poly corals!

Cynarina corals, often called button corals or meat corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals prized for their striking, inflated appearance and vibrant coloration, which can include shades of red, green, pink, orange, and translucent hues. These corals have a fleshy, balloon-like body that expands dramatically under optimal conditions, making them standout specimens in reef aquariums.

Cynarina corals prefer low to moderate lighting and low, gentle water flow to avoid tissue damage and allow full polyp extension.

Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm. While they are photosynthetic, they benefit from regular target feedings of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or LPS pellets, which support their large tissue mass and enhance coloration.

These corals should be placed on the sandbed or a stable low-rock surface with plenty of space, as their delicate tissue is easily injured by sharp objects or nearby aggressive corals. With stable conditions and careful handling, Cynarina corals can thrive and add dramatic beauty to a reef aquarium.
