Collection: Lobophyllia/ Symphyllia
Symphyllia corals, often referred to as closed brain corals or meat corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their fleshy, lobed appearance and vivid coloration, which can include bold reds, greens, blues, and oranges. These corals are relatively hardy and make excellent centerpiece additions to reef aquariums when provided with stable water conditions.
Symphyllia corals prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow that allows their fleshy tissue to expand fully without risk of damage. Ideal aquarium parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium around 1250–1350 ppm.
Though they are photosynthetic, Symphyllia corals benefit from supplemental feedings of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral-specific blends to support growth and maintain vibrant color. These corals can be moderately aggressive, so they should be placed with enough space to prevent stinging nearby tank mates. With proper care, consistent parameters, and careful placement, Symphyllia corals can thrive and bring long-lasting beauty to a reef tank.
