WYSIWYG -

Hydnophora corals, often referred to as horn corals or velvet horn corals, are fast-growing large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their branching, encrusting, or plating forms and their bright green, neon, or tan coloration. These corals are aggressive and possess potent sweeper tentacles, so they must be placed with ample space from other corals to prevent damage.

Hydnophora corals thrive under moderate to high lighting and moderate, turbulent water flow that helps remove waste and deliver nutrients. Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium around 1250–1350 ppm. While they rely primarily on photosynthesis via their zooxanthellae, Hydnophora can benefit from occasional feedings of small meaty or planktonic foods.

These corals are relatively hardy and fast-growing but are best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists who can manage their aggression and provide stable water chemistry. With proper care and thoughtful placement, Hydnophora corals can add vibrant color and dynamic structure to a reef aquarium.
