Bowerbanki corals (Acanthastrea bowerbanki) are vibrant and eye-catching large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their chunky, fleshy polyps and striking coloration, often featuring bright reds, oranges, greens, and contrasting rings. These corals are relatively hardy and grow in an encrusting or dome-shaped formation, making them a great choice for all reef aquarists. Bowerbankis prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow, which allows their fleshy polyps to expand fully without being damaged.
Ideal aquarium parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity at 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm.
Though photosynthetic, Bowerbanki corals benefit significantly from regular feedings of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef pellets, which promote faster growth and more intense coloration. They should be placed on the sandbed or low rockwork with space to expand and kept away from aggressive corals, as they can be sensitive to stings. With stable water conditions and consistent care, Bowerbanki corals can thrive and become a colorful and rewarding addition to any LPS or mixed reef aquarium.
