Trachyphyllia corals, commonly known as open brain corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals celebrated for their bold, fleshy appearance and vibrant coloration, which can range from neon green and red to metallic blue and gold. These corals are relatively hardy and make excellent centerpiece specimens in reef aquariums, especially when placed on the sandbed where they can fully expand without risk of tissue damage.

Trachyphyllia corals prefer low to moderate lighting and gentle, indirect water flow that allows their polyps to swell without being disturbed. Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm.

While they rely on photosynthesis via their zooxanthellae, they benefit greatly from regular feedings of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef-specific pellets to enhance growth and coloration. Trachyphyllia corals are generally peaceful but should be given ample space to avoid contact with aggressive neighbors. With stable water conditions and proper care, they can thrive and add long-lasting beauty and color to any reef aquarium.
