Toadstool leather corals (Sarcophyton spp.) are hardy and distinctive soft corals known for their thick stalks and broad, mushroom-like caps that often feature tiny, waving polyps. These corals are ideal for both beginner and experienced reef aquarists due to their resilience and tolerance of a wide range of conditions.
Toadstool leathers thrive under moderate to high lighting and moderate, varied water flow, which helps them shed their waxy coating—a natural process that clears debris and promotes growth. Ideal aquarium parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.024–1.026 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity at 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium around 1250–1350 ppm.
These corals are photosynthetic and do not require supplemental feeding, although they can benefit from the presence of dissolved nutrients and occasional additions of planktonic foods. Toadstool leathers can grow quite large and may release allelopathic chemicals, so it’s important to provide adequate space and use activated carbon if keeping them in mixed coral systems. With proper lighting, water flow, and stable parameters, toadstool leather corals can thrive and become an impressive, long-lived centerpiece in a reef aquarium.
