WYSIWYG
Cristata corals (Euphyllia cristata), also known as grape corals, are a visually striking species of large polyp stony (LPS) coral closely related to torch, hammer, and frogspawn corals. They are easily recognized by their short, bubble-tipped tentacles that resemble clusters of grapes, giving them a unique and compact appearance. Cristata corals are moderately hardy and well-suited for aquarists with some reefkeeping experience.
They thrive in moderate lighting and moderate, indirect water flow that allows gentle movement of their tentacles without causing tissue stress. Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm.
While primarily photosynthetic, Cristata corals benefit from occasional feedings of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or LPS pellets to support growth and coloration. Like other Euphyllia species, they have sweeper tentacles and can be aggressive toward neighboring corals, so adequate spacing is essential. With stable conditions and careful placement, Cristata corals can thrive and add a bold, eye-catching presence to any reef aquarium.
