WYSIWYG -

Chalice corals, a diverse group of large polyp stony (LPS) corals primarily from the Echinophyllia, Oxypora, and Mycedium genera, are prized for their vibrant, iridescent coloration and unique growth forms that can encrust, plate, or form ridged, cup-like structures. Chalices thrive under low to moderate lighting, as too much light can cause bleaching or color loss, and they prefer low to moderate, indirect water flow to prevent tissue damage and encourage healthy growth.

Ideal aquarium parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm. While they are photosynthetic, chalice corals benefit greatly from weekly feedings of small meaty foods such as reef roids, cyclops, or finely chopped mysis shrimp, which support coloration and growth.

These corals can be aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night, so it’s important to give them ample space from neighboring corals. With stable water conditions, careful placement, and regular feeding, chalice corals can thrive and become some of the most visually stunning pieces in a reef aquarium.
