WYSIWYG -
Rhodactis mushroom corals, often referred to as Rhodactis mushrooms or hairy mushrooms, are a popular and hardy soft coral species known for their textured, fleshy appearance and vibrant coloration, which can include shades of green, purple, red, and blue.
These corals are ideal for both beginner and experienced reef aquarists due to their tolerance of a wide range of conditions and ease of care. Rhodactis mushrooms prefer low to moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow, which allows them to open fully without being irritated by strong currents. Ideal aquarium parameters for optimal health include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.024–1.026 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium around 1250–1350 ppm.
While they obtain much of their energy from photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, Rhodactis mushrooms may benefit from occasional feedings of fine particulate foods like phytoplankton or coral powders. They are fast-growing and can spread across rocks, so careful placement is needed to prevent them from overtaking other corals. With stable water quality and minimal maintenance, Rhodactis mushrooms can thrive and add bold texture and color to a reef aquarium.
