WYSIWYG
Clove polyp corals (Clavularia spp.) are soft corals admired for their delicate, flower-like polyps that open and sway gracefully in the current, adding both color and movement to reef aquariums. Available in a variety of striking hues, including purples, blues, greens, and metallic tones, clove polyps are fast growers and can quickly form dense mats that spread across rockwork, making them ideal for creating vibrant, living backdrops.
They thrive in low to moderate lighting and benefit from low to moderate, indirect water flow, which helps keep detritus from settling while allowing their polyps to extend fully.
Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium around 1250–1350 ppm.
While primarily photosynthetic, clove polyps may benefit from occasional feedings of fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or coral-specific blends to encourage faster growth. Because they can spread aggressively, careful placement is recommended to prevent them from overtaking other corals. With stable conditions and proper care, clove polyp corals can thrive and bring vibrant, flowing beauty to a reef aquarium.
