WYSIWYG -
Favites corals, commonly referred to as closed brain or maze corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals characterized by their domed or encrusting growth patterns and distinctive, honeycomb-like skeletal structure. Available in a variety of vibrant colors and patterns, Favites are relatively hardy and well-suited for intermediate reef aquarists who can provide stable water conditions and adequate spacing.
These corals prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow to encourage healthy polyp extension and prevent tissue damage. Ideal aquarium parameters for Favites include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity at 8–12 dKH, calcium between 400–450 ppm, and magnesium around 1250–1350 ppm.
While they are primarily photosynthetic, Favites benefit from occasional feedings of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or coral-specific blends, especially in low-nutrient systems. They can be aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night, so adequate space should be maintained between them and neighboring corals. With proper care and placement, Favites corals can thrive and become a durable, eye-catching addition to a reef aquarium.
