WYSIWYG -
St. Thomas mushroom corals (Rhodactis sanctithomae) are unique and eye-catching members of the corallimorph family, known for their large, fleshy bodies, bubbly or frilly textures, and vibrant coloration, often featuring greens, purples, blues, and reds. These mushrooms are generally hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for both beginner and advanced reef aquarists.
They prefer low to moderate lighting and low, indirect water flow to prevent detachment or tissue damage, as strong currents can irritate their sensitive tissue. Ideal aquarium parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.024–1.026 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm.
While primarily photosynthetic, St. Thomas mushrooms may benefit from occasional feeding of small particulate foods like phytoplankton or powdered coral foods to encourage growth and color vibrancy. They can expand significantly in size and may become aggressive toward nearby corals, so ample space should be provided. With stable water conditions and appropriate placement, these distinctive mushroom corals can thrive and become a colorful, flowing addition to a soft or mixed reef aquarium.
