WYSIWYG - 2+ polyp
Duncan corals (Duncanopsammia axifuga) are attractive and hardy large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their long, flowing tentacles and vibrant green, pink, or purple centers. They are a favorite among reef aquarists for their ease of care, peaceful nature, and active polyp extension, which adds movement and color to a tank.
Duncan corals thrive under moderate lighting—LED or T5 systems work well—and low to moderate water flow that allows their polyps to gently sway without being blasted by current. Ideal aquarium parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm.
While they are photosynthetic, Duncans benefit from regular target feedings of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral pellets, which can accelerate growth and encourage new head formation. They are best placed on the sandbed or low rockwork in areas with room to expand and should be kept away from aggressive neighbors. With stable water conditions and proper care, Duncan corals can flourish and become a lively, fast-growing addition to reef aquariums.
