Goniopora & alveopora corals, commonly known as flowerpot corals, are visually striking large polyp stony (LPS) corals recognized for their dense clusters of long, flower-like polyps that sway gracefully in the current. Once considered difficult to keep, advancements in coral husbandry have made Goniopora more accessible to reef aquarists.

These corals prefer moderate lighting (LED or T5) and moderate, random water flow that keeps their polyps extended without causing excessive movement. Ideal water parameters include a temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity at 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 420–460 ppm, and magnesium around 1300–1400 ppm.

Flowepot corals benefit from regular feedings of fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton, reef roids, or specialized coral foods, which help maintain their energy and polyp extension. They should be placed in stable, low-aggression areas of the tank with enough space to expand fully. With proper water quality, gentle flow, and consistent nutrition, Goniopora can thrive and become a captivating centerpiece in a reef aquarium.
