Blastomusa corals, including the well-known Blastomusa wellsi and Blastomusa merletti, are colorful and hardy large polyp stony (LPS) corals that make excellent additions to reef aquariums due to their vibrant hues—ranging from red and orange to green and purple—and their relatively easy care requirements. B. wellsi features larger, fleshy polyps, while B. merletti displays smaller, more compact heads, but both thrive under similar conditions.
These corals prefer low to moderate lighting and low to moderate, indirect water flow that encourages polyp extension without causing tissue damage. Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm.
While primarily photosynthetic, Blastomusa corals benefit from supplemental feedings of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef-specific micro foods, which can enhance growth and coloration. They are peaceful and should be placed away from aggressive corals but can be grouped together or with other non-aggressive species. With stable water conditions and regular feeding, Blastomusa corals can thrive and add vibrant color and texture to any LPS or mixed reef aquarium.
