Platygyra corals, commonly known as brain corals or maze corals, are large polyp stony (LPS) corals recognized for their intricate, maze-like skeletal patterns and vibrant hues of green, brown, red, or purple. These hardy and slow-growing. Platygyra corals thrive under moderate lighting—LEDs or T5s work well—and low to moderate, indirect water flow that encourages gentle polyp extension without damaging their tissue. Ideal aquarium parameters include a stable temperature of 76–80°F (24–27°C), salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, pH between 8.1–8.4, alkalinity of 8–12 dKH, calcium levels of 400–450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250–1350 ppm. Though they are photosynthetic, Platygyra corals benefit from occasional feedings of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, reef roids, or finely chopped seafood to promote growth and vibrant coloration. They should be placed on a stable surface with space from other corals, as their sweeper tentacles can extend and sting nearby neighbors. With consistent care and water stability, Platygyra corals can thrive and become a unique, long-lasting addition to a reef aquarium.
